Adam Atlas's (Aquarium of the Pacific) presentation at the E-Aquarium Conference 2021). Palythoa is a genus of soft corals in the Order Zoantharia. Palythoas possess an extremely potent neurotoxin called palytoxin (PTX). PTX is not exclusive to Palythoas, and can be found in the closely related genus Protopalythoa and certain species of Zoanthus. The natural producer of PTX is still debatable, though a number of microorganisms are suspected to synthesize this compound. PTX functions by preventing the pumping of sodium and potassium across the cell membrane, resulting in cell death. In aquariums, PTX poisoning (palytoxicosis) most commonly occurs when aquarists attempt to inappropriately dispose of Palythoas. PTX has multiple ways to enter the body of an unsuspecting aquarist, and no direct cure currently exists for palytoxicosis. Removing and disposing of Palythoas must be done with extreme care, to prevent PTX poisoning of both an individual and the system. In this presentation, I will discuss the protocol I have developed for the Aquarium of the Pacific, which allows the partial or full removal of Palythoa colonies in a manner that is both safe for the aquarist staff and the exhibits. This benefits our exhibits by keeping the highly competitive Palythoa colonies under control, and freeing up space for more desirable coral colonies
